Flax Weaving Tutorial at the Dorman Museum, Middlesbrough

Deb Gillanders was a special guest at the museum, and as part of this extra-curricular meeting she showed us how to take our first steps into mastering the traditional discipline of flax weaving. she told stories for ages beforehand, it was nice sitting with eyes closed listening to her accent and stories.

You can see how I didn’t get the process right at first, but it’s only one mistake ^^v once i got used to the movement it went smoothly and became really relaxing, lots of arm movement like knitting :) and you can watch TV while you’re doing it.

We were supposed to make bookmarks, but by stripping the flax into a half-width with my pocketknife I made mine thinner so it could be used as a bracelet ^_^. Then, as is the traditional Maori rule for the first thing you make, I had to give it away. I decided to give mine to my housemate as he moved away last week…
